Principles for a Benediction

  • These passages are only about 5-20 seconds in length. These benedictions send the congregation out with God’s divine blessing.
  • The following Benedictions have been read by God’s people for thousands of years. We commune with God and His holy bride when we read the Scriptures on the Lord’s Day.
  • What better way to close your church service than to pronounce God’s divine blessings on the people of God.
  • Some churches prefer to close the service in prayer. That’s great! Use these Benedictions right before the prayer like this: “As the Psalmist declares, May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace! Bro. Tim, please close us in prayer.”
  • Or use the Benediction right after the prayer, like this: “. . . and, Lord, we ask for your strength and boldness to be a faithful witness this week. It’s in Christ name we pray these things. (pause) Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. And all God’s people said, Amen.

Old Testament

Psalm 112:1 Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!

Psalm 115:14-15 May the Lord give you increase, you and your children! May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth!

Psalm 119:1-3 Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!
